Left Valdez and travelled back to Anchorage area. Took a side trip to Chetna and the Copper river in the Wrangell / St Elias National park.
Stopped and fished at Long Lake, which was stocked with large and unafraid randbows. I hooked one, but they were reluctant to take. I needed a pellet fly!
Needed to make some critical calls. So headed back to Valdez.
On the way, fished the Gulkana. No fish.
Stopped at Blueberry Lake, which was gorgeous. Didnt fish, and only small fish seen.
Camped at Valdez well away from the salmon!
Fishing was slow in Valdez. I was after the pinks and before the silvers. Also Valdez fishing is fishing off a steep bank with crowds. So I headed north to Tangle Lakes and got some grayling. over 50 fish - 30 on the dry, the rest on the nymph. It wasnt uncommon to miss the dry rise and discover I also had a nymph take. A couple of times ended up with 2 fish at once. All small, but great fun!
Started off with breakfast at Snow City Cafe - which specialises in Eggs Benedict.
Then drove to Valdez, which took all day. Part of the problem was having to stop every 5 km to take more pictures!
At the bottom there is a picture of a sea lion that was eating salmon right next to the shore.
